Vintage matchbooks have some of my favorite sources of visual inspiration: cartoons, the texture of old paper and cheap, four color process printing. The alligator was so cool, I put him on the splash page and changed the original colors he was printed in to add contrast. Cheaply printed type on the matches seemed like an obvious choice for the subhead, while spelling out the author’s name with scratches on the striking surface was another chance to have fun with typography.
