Using bright colors and cut paper, a format more commonly seen in children’s books and lighter material, makes for a strange, visually arresting contrast with the book’s surrealism and notoriously dark themes. That contrast, and the cartoony treatment of Thompson’s likeness, is irreverent, humorous, and absurd, all themes at the heart of the author’s worldview. That tone is further emphasized in the dashed-off, erratic feel of the handwritten title.
I used the book’s title as the basis for a visual pun. Although it shares a concept very similar to a poster for the film, I did not find out about the poster until several years after designing this cover, which was conceived and executed by me alone.
Homicide is a true crime classic that focuses on the theme of obsession: a rookie homicide detective obsessed with a murder he cannot solve. The title treatment, in addition to referencing the case files he pores over for fresh insight, show the sentences in the book describing his obsession: different theories about the crime, things he might have done differently, and new evidence that may implicate (or exonerate) his prime suspect.
Egan's novel traces the lives of members of a punk band from their teenage years into messy adulthood. I used an unspooled cassette tape as a metaphor for that unraveling.
