Vintage matchbooks have some of my favorite sources of visual inspiration: cartoons, the texture of old paper, and cheap, four color process printing. I wanted to show them off with enough white space for maximum contrast. The alligator was so cool, I put him on the splash page and changed the original, more sombre colors he was printed in to increase the contrast. Cheaply printed type printed on matches seemed like an obvious choice for the subhead, while spelling out the author’s name with scratches on the match book’s striking surface was another chance to have fun with typography.
